Phasmids (Stick Insects)

It may seem a strange addition to this website dedicated to plants, but it was these fascinating insects, many species of which feed on 'Brambles', that first got me interested in Rubus and thus, in plants, so it seems only right to dedicate a page to them.

There are nearly 3,000 species of stick insect in the world. They all feed on vegetation and are one of the most popular forms of insect pets.

Over the years I have had cultures of many different species. Below is a list of those I have at present. Eggs(Ova) are sometimes available for sale or exchange (please enquire).

Eurycantha calcarata
This species from New Guinea, is one of my favourites and I have had these on and off since I was 12. This is a tough, robust species that is easy to keep. Happy on most species of rubus.Eurycantha_calcarata1

Peruphasma schultei
A very unusual and beautiful stick insect from Peru. Has small red wings which it flashes when under threat. A privet eater, but will take bramble too.Peruphasma
