The National Collection of Lobelia Species
I was awarded the National Collection status in November this year and was really thrilled to get it. I have collected Lobelias in a small way since my nursery days in the late 90's and the L x speciosa varieties were some of the first plants I propagated for sale. The collection focuses on the wild species of which there are over 300. They come from various habitats and are a global genus. The largest concentration of species are in Northern America and Southern Africa. The U.K has 2 native species. The genus includes dwarf alpines, herbaceous perennials, annual herbs and giant tree lobelias from Africa and the Hawaiian Islands. At present the collection is small, but it is growing all the time. Of course we would really appreciate any support and if you have a less common species that you feel should be in the National Collection, please contact us. Comments and ideas always appreciated-see the guest book.
comosa Delicate species native to the grassy plains of Southern Africa. Perennial with clusters of 4 to 6 flowers held on very long stems.
erinus Common annual grown as a bedding plant and coming in a multitude of different colours. The true species is native to South Africa where it is a short lived perennial.
jasiniodes Very tiny, but beautiful flowers of pale pink. This annual is native to South Africa.
